Adoption Procedures
Click here to see animals that are currently available for adoption at the VBSPCA.
Here is what you can expect during the VBSPCA adoption process:
Kennel Visitors
If you are interested in meeting with a dog, have a question for our kennel team, or want to fill out an application, you will be asked to sign in to our customer portal using your smartphone. Please scan the QR code located on the sign next to the kennel entrance. When you sign in, you will be placed in the queue to meet with an Animal Care Technician, and you will be notified on your smartphone when it is your turn. Should you decide that you want to adopt an animal, a staff member will assist you with the application process.
Cattery/Small Animal Room Visitors
If you are interested in meeting a cat or small animal, let a cattery team member know and they will assist you. If you would like to fill out an application for one of our animals, you will be asked to sign in to our customer portal using your smartphone. Please scan the QR code located on the sign next to the cattery visiting rooms. When you sign in, you will be placed in the queue to meet with an Animal Care Technician, and you will be notified on your smartphone when it is your turn. A staff member will assist you with the application process.
Once you have submitted your application, you will have 48 hours to fulfill all adopter requirements as listed below:
Please note that all animals adopted from the VBSPCA will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
The VBSPCA allows for out-of-state adoptions but reserves the right to deny out-of-state applicants if it is in the best interest of the animal. Please note that any dogs who are undergoing heartworm treatment at the time of adoption must remain within a 75 mile radius of the VBSPCA during the treatment process.
While we can sometimes accommodate same-day adoptions, in most cases we will ask you to make an appointment to finalize your adoption once you have submitted all required documents.
When you come for your adoption appointment, you must have a collar and leash for your adopted dog/puppy or a collar and carrier for your adopted cat/kitten that you will use to take them home. You may bring these items with you, or you can purchase them at the VBSPCA Pet Retail Store at the shelter. All proceeds from the store go to support our animals. If you are adopting a small animal, you should have an enclosure at home suitable to the animal type and size, and you should bring a non-cardboard, breathable container to collect your new pet.
