That belief was reflected in the way they lived. Joe and Betsy adopted two dogs from the Virginia Beach SPCA during their marriage, and Betsy adopted two more shortly after Joe’s passing. In between, they welcomed four other stray dogs into their home. All of these hounds filled their home with love, joy, and plenty of antics.

Joe was known as smart, generous, loyal, compassionate in a no-nonsense way, funny and, though often reserved, animated and dynamic when speaking about things that mattered. These are all qualities that made him a valued friend, community leader, and advocate.

Joe put his commitment to animals into action through his service on the Virginia Beach SPCA Board of Directors, including as board president. Generous in a low-key way, his dedication to the VBSPCA was a meaningful expression of his belief in giving back.

This September, Betsy is honoring Joe’s memory and their September 15 anniversary with a $20,000 matching gift.

Every gift made to the VBSPCA in Joe’s memory will be matched dollar for dollar by Betsy, up to $20,000. “It was a privilege to have been married to my remarkable husband and I can think of no more powerful way to keep his legacy alive,” said Betsy in making this gift.
