Tom joined 10 on your side in 2007, and anchors the 5, 6, and 11 pm news, along with WAVY News at 10 on Fox43. He earned three regional Emmy Awards for his series on football returning to Old Dominion University, and won several AP awards and Emmy nominations. Teamwork is a value Tom fosters in the newsroom.
“WAVY operates like a machine when news breaks, and I value the role of the anchor in this situation. He must inform the public in a concise but calm, reassuring manner. That’s what an anchor does. He or she must guide the viewer, using our award winning reporters and producers to paint a scene that goes beyond the images you see.”
Prior to his move to Hampton Roads, Tom spent 12 years in Central Florida running between hurricanes, space shuttle launches and NASCAR’s Daytona 500. He also covered the Florida Gators’ successful runs at consecutive NCAA titles in football and basketball. But Tom’s most memorable stories came during 2004, when nature slammed the Orlando area with four hurricanes.
“That’s when you have to improvise, and do all you can to just get on the air. It can be a humbling experience.”
Tom married his wife Crystal in 2011, who is a former TV journalist, public relations executive, and press secretary. She is a sommelier, and wine consultant who recently started her own business.
Tom also bleeds Black and Gold, rooting for every team in Pittsburgh, where he grew up. He graduated from Duquesne University with BA degree in speech and journalism.
