Junior volunteers assist kennel and cattery staff in the day-to-day operations of the shelter. Cleaning and other support activities are a major part of the junior volunteer’s duties.  Please note that new Junior Volunteers handle animals infrequently.  With time and experience JVs are able to help more with direct animal care.  There is very little "playtime".  Motivated self-starters make the most successful JVs.  Interested teens should fill out an application, obtain a letter of reference, and answer the four short essay questions on the application cover sheet.  Orientations are by invitation only, in the order we receive complete application packets.  AFTER you apply, you will be sent an parent/JV orientation and JV training schedule. We hold orientations and trainings four times per year.  Please see the following schedule:

2013 Spring Session: Monday, April 1, 2013 - Friday, June 14, 2013.  Applications due no later than Monday, March 25, 2013.

2013 Summer Session: Saturday, June 15, 2013 - Sunday, September 1, 2013.  Applications due no later than Friday, May 24, 2013.

Many teens between the ages of 13-17 are required to do community service in order to fulfill school obligations.  For these students we offer "Community Service Saturdays" during the school year.  Since space is limited within the shelter, many teens opt to hold supply drives, dog washes, and other projects specifically geared to help the Virginia Beach SPCA.  If you need school-required community service hours, please contact our Education Director at educationdirector@vbspca.com.
