Temporary Foster Program Service
Category : Shelter Information
The Virginia Beach SPCA is committed to keeping families and pets together during crisis situations. The temporary foster program is designed to temporarily house animals for owners while they are living in battered women’s or homeless shelters. This service is offered free of charge, although contributions toward the care of your animal are always deeply appreciated. As a non-profit charity with limited space and resources, the VBSPCA must put limitations on which animals we can house and for how long. Please read the following conditions of the temporary foster program: The VBSPCA is NOT a boarding facility, and should only be contacted as a LAST RESORT. It is always best for your animal if they can stay in a home environment. Before contacting the VBSPCA, please reach out to neighbors, friends, and family and ask for their assistance. It is the owner’s responsibility to arrange for the transport of their animal to and from the shelter. We do not have staff who can pick-up and drop-off your animal for you. All animals temporarily housed by the VBSPCA MUST be spayed or neutered, or the owner must agree to have, at the owner’s cost, the animal spayed or neutered during their stay at the VBSPCA. If the owner does not retrieve their animal by the agreed upon date, ownership of the animal automatically transfers to the VBSPCA, at which time the animal may be placed for adoption or euthanized. Only authorized personnel of the VBSPCA may extend the time period that an animal may stay at the shelter. During the spring and summer, which are the busiest times of year for the VBSPCA, time CANNOT be extended. If at any time during the foster period, you determine you can no longer care for your pet, please let us know right away, so we may begin the adoption process. The less time your pet spends in the shelter, the happier your pet will be. Shelter life is stressful for animals. Stress can cause animals to be more susceptible to diseases, such as upper respiratory infections. Pets should be vaccinated BEFORE their temporary stay with the VBSPCA. The VBSPCA is not liable for any infection an animal may contract from their stay in the shelter.
