The Neuter Scooter 2010 Schedule and Appointment Information
Over one thousand animals have been neutered or spayed in just 8 short months thanks to the diligent efforts of our Neuter Scooter staff. The Neuter Scooter staff of five consists of: Dr. Correa, a licensed veterinarian; Shannon Wilson, a licensed vet tech; Brandy Cullop, a vet assistant; Jonathan Schenefeld, who holds a Commercial Driver’s License to operate the Neuter Scooter and fills in when needed; and Dana Goheen who is the VBSPCA’s Clinic Coordinator and oversees the operation of the Neuter Scooter.
The “scooter” as it is sometimes fondly called, currently serves five locations and has been invited to serve two more. It was purchased last October and launched on “Spay Day” in February of 2007, with the objective of providing low-cost veterinary services to pet owners in the community who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford the necessary care their animals require. As the name implies, the Neuter Scooter was designed to focus primarily on spaying and neutering the animals in order to continue preventing the overpopulation of felines and canines. We are thrilled to report that the Neuter Scooter has far surpassed our expectations! In less than a year, we are very proud to have been able to provide a remarkable 1000 spays and neuters to animals throughout the Greater Hampton Roads Area.
“It is a magnificent feeling,” says Dana Goheen, who has played a key role in ensuring the scooter’s success. “The pet owners are grateful and appreciative of the services we bring to them.” In addition to being a mobile vet clinic, our Neuter Scooter’s dual function is that of a Medical Disaster Response Vehicle. After seeing the catastrophic events following Hurricane Katrina, the VBSPCA has been participating in disaster training and planning. The Neuter Scooter will be able to assist the community in the event of a disaster in Hampton Roads.
We would like to thank the Norfolk Foundation, the Alfred L Nicholson Fund and the Darden Foundation for donating the funds needed to make the Neuter Scooter a reality; we also would like to thank the community for the enthusiastic reception that the Neuter Scooter has received while serving its various locations. Every pet owner should be able to afford to have their animals altered. The Virginia Beach SPCA is reaching that goal one pet at a time.
