The mission of the Virginia Beach SPCA is to help create communities with an increased capacity for compassion and a decreased tolerance for cruelty.

Crazy Cat Clearance
and
Fabulous Feline Frenzy

Perhaps it's the summer heat or the really high number of cats at the shelter that are affecting our sanity? Either way, we are doing the unthinkable and having a Crazy Cat Clearance, a Fabulous Feline Frenzy and even a ROHO (Rescue One Help One) event. Beginning June 13th through August 31st 2009, the Virginia Beach SPCA will be holding multiple cat adoption promotions aimed at increasing the adoption of adult cats.

We are also holding a special Christmas In July adoption event! Click here for more information.

June, July and August are typically the height of cat/kitten season and are historically when shelters across the country are faced with the dilemma of unprecedented feline numbers. During these months adult cats are often overlooked due to the availability of kittens, increasing the length of their stay at the shelter and reducing their chances of adoption. We also hope to dispel the myth that older cats have a shorter remaining lifespan. The average indoor cat can live 15 to 20 years. A 10 year old cat would be a great addition to a family for as many as ten additional years.

So if you've been toying with the idea of adopting a cat, there's no better time than now. With our Crazy Cat Clearance, visitors adopting a cat between the age of one and seven years will be provided with an opportunity to draw from our mystery coupon bag. Discounts can range from $10 off an adoption fee to 100% waived adoption fee. The Fabulous Feline Frenzy offers a whopping $50 discount off our standard adoption fee for cats age eight years or older. Our ROHO event provides families with a $40 discount off one adoption fee when adopting two eligible cats.

Remember...this is a limited time offer! All standard adoption requirements apply. Adoption package includes spay/neuter if needed, 1 years Rabies vaccination, microchip, and a Feline Leukemia/FIV combo test. Offer void where prohibited. Offer can not be combined with other discounts. Quantities limited! But really...come to the shelter and save a life (and a few dollars) during these fantastic events.

Why adopt an older cat?

  • In less than 2 months, kittens will be cats.
  • What you see is what you get.  With an adult cat, their size, personality and behavior will already have been developed.
  • They do not require as much supervision.
  • Like kittens, they are still playful.  Unlike kittens, they have a greater appreciation of quiet, cuddle time.
  • Adult cats are easier to care for than rambunctious juveniles, and they’re typically litterbox trained and accustomed to life in a home.
  • Did we mention they are litterbox trained!  (we know we did, but it's worth mentioning again)

Hurricane season began June 1.  Include your pets in your disaster preparedness plans.

Make advance preparations for your pet in the event of a hurricane.  Don't wait until the last minute to get ready. Warnings of hurricanes or other disasters may be issued days, or even only hours, in advance.

Preparations you should do now:

  • Develop a plan that includes taking your pet with you if you should have to evacuate.
  • Ensure your pet is up to date on its vaccinations (required by pet-friendly shelters).
  • Prepare a contact list of pet-friendly shelters, hotels, and boarding facilities.
  • Store proof of vaccination records, current photo and a written description of pet in a zip lock bag.
  • Place city license, rabies and id tag on your pet's collar.
  • Have harnesses, leashes, muzzles, carriers, crates and all other items necessary to safely transport and house your pet available.
  • Plan for 3 to 5 days of food and water for each pet, to include bowls for feeding.
  • Comfort items for your pet.  Beds, blankets, favorite toy or other items that may help make them feel more comfortable and reduce stress.
  • Have current medications on hand, including flea preventative.
  • Don't forget litterboxes, paper towels and plastic bags for pet waste.

As the storm approaches:

  • Bring pets into the house and confine them so you can leave with them quickly if necessary.
  • Perform a final review your preparedness checklist to ensure all necessary items needed to safely evacuate with your pet are on hand.

For a checklist of items to have on hand for weathering out the storm or evacuations, visit the Pet Preparedness Checklist

The Neuter Scooter is going green and you can help by giving us the grease from your fryer.  Just bring your used frying oil such as vegetable, sunflower, peanut, canola and olive oil (no animal based oils) returned to the original container and place the containers in green bins at the Virginia Beach SPCA.  Click here for additional information.
