The HOPE program will help people with pets who are having a hard time making ends meet.  The economic downturn has affected everyone, some more than others.  People who meet eligibility requirements (i.e. unemployment statement, food stamp eligibility, or foreclosure notice) can receive pet food and limited veterinary services. “We want to help people keep their companion animals during economic crises” said Sharon Adams, Executive Director, for the Virginia Beach SPCA.  “We trust that by helping people through a tough time we can offer hope to families who feel as if they are losing everything, including their furry best friends.”

The Virginia Beach SPCA provides bags of dog and cat food to families struggling to feed their families and their pets; when food is available in the Pet Pantry.  The Virginia Beach SPCA Clinic will reduce office visit fees for eligible families if their animal becomes ill or injured and needs care.  Other services will be developed as we learn what families need to get through this crisis with their family pets.  Amanda Panuline will be the central point of contact for the HOPE program at the Virginia Beach SPCA and can be reached at 427-0070 Ext. 113.  People wishing to be considered as a HOPE recipient, should call for an appointment.

If your organization or community is engaged in programs to benefit families with pets, the Virginia Beach SPCA would like to know about it.  Please let the Virginia Beach SPCA know if you would like for us to share your program information with those who contact us about the HOPE program. Please e-mail questions or information on other programs to assist those in need to volunteer@vbspca.com. We will post all programs our services on the HOPE page of our website, www.vbspca.com/hope.

If you want to help, buy a bag of dog or cat food from your local merchant and bring it to the Virginia Beach SPCA.  In addition, you can donate to the HOPE medical fund by sending a check to VBSPCA, 3040 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23453, make a credit card donation to 427-6387 or donate online at www.vbspca.com.    The Virginia Beach SPCA takes in and cares for nearly 5,000 homeless domestic animals each year.  It is the mission of the Virginia Beach SPCA to create a more humane and responsible community by decreasing the community’s tolerance for cruelty while increasing its capacity for compassion.  In keeping with our mission, the Virginia Beach SPCA is happy to offer this program to give back to those in need.
