![]() Is your canine a good citizen? Why not find out by attending our monthly Canine Good Citizen assessment workshop. Assessments are available every month at the Virginia Beach SPCA. Pre-registration is required. Your dog will need to be able to follow a variety of obedience commands and stay calm in unfamiliar surroundings. We will only certify altered animals and they are required be current on all vaccines (please bring proof of vaccination) and have a current city license. Cost is $15. To sign up contact our Humane Education Director at extension 18. ___________________________________________ Marianne Sutherland has been training dogs in Virginia Beach since 1992 and has worked with the VBSPCA for the past 13 years. She has competed in AKC trials, earning CD titles on her own dogs. She has participated in agility, dock-diving, and taken dogs to visit nursery school and retirement homes. She has earned Canine Good Citizen certificates for several of her own dogs and has now become an Evaluator for the shelter. She is also certified in animal first aide and CPR. She teaches a free Getting To Know Your Dog class once a month for VBSPCA adopters. She holds obedience classes on Monday and Tuesday evenings for Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels. BASIC: Dogs at least 5 months old. This course teaches basic skills such as heeling, sit, down, stand and stay, as well as socialization with people and other dogs. INTERMEDIATE: Review of basics, some off lead; also learning wait and come. ADVANCED: More off lead work and hand signals. All classes are $60 for 6 weeks, one hour per week.
